Hammertoes are most commonly associated with high-arched feet and are sometimes coupled with other symptoms like Mortons Neuroma, neuropathy, exposed metatarsals, and even fat pad atrophy syndrome in extreme cases. Metatarsal pads and generally a reverse Mortons extension, coupled with arch support and a deep heel cup, provide the best results for orthotic solutions. Specific shoes to help forefoot relief will generally relieve pain and reduce the likelihood of the hammertoes developing further. Surgical options for hammertoes include cutting the tendons and sometimes creating a fusion.
In all our consultations, based on observation, we recommend speaking to your physician about surgery options and what those outcomes will look like pertaining to your shoe-wearing options in the future, as well as the effect it will have on your gait cycle if fusing your toes is involved. Your gait cycle (how you walk) may be affected, resulting in a shorter gait cycle when any fusion is needed for surgery. We work with multiple physicians and surgeons and see post-op patients, so we have a great way of explaining this in more detail during your consultation.
